The PEOPLE of JD Energy

Market Economics

John Dean, President of JD Energy, has over 30 years experience in the coal and coal transportation field. He has conducted site-specific coal price forecasts for numerous electricity and industrial companies, written extensively on coal procurement issues, and directed policy analyses on such issues as the economic and energy impacts of global warming and other environmental legislation as well as inter-regional coal market shifts. John has given expert testimony before public utility commissions in Ohio and Pennsylvania, has provided written testimony before the U.S. Congress, and has conducted litigation research in a wide range of cases.

Prior to founding JD Energy, John spent five years at DRI/McGraw Hill (1981-1986), where he directed the DRI Coal Service and the DRI Fuel Procurement Service. During twelve years in the Federal Government, he served at the Department of Energy (and its predecessor, the Federal Energy Administration) directing site-specific fuel supply and transportation analyses of utility and industrial plants, held the position of Deputy Director of a fuels regulatory group, and worked as a policy analyst evaluating electric power and coal issues. For two years prior to forming JD Energy, John held positions at Hay Systems, Inc. (a Saatchi and Saatchi subsidiary) as Chief Financial Officer and Vice President-Energy.

Mining Engineering

Landy Stinnett, based in Denver, has been a minerals consultant for 32 years and has worked with JD Energy since its inception. He performs engineering, economic, and management analyses relating to mineral reserve estimation, mine layout and planning, risk assessments, market opportunities, and extensive mine costing analysis throughout the West and Midwest. An independent contractor since 1979, Landy has an M.S. in Mining Engineering from the University of Minnesota and both an M.S. and B.S. in Geological Engineering from the South Dakota School of Mines.

Walt Kaufman has conducted mining engineering work with JD Energy since the late 1980’s, focusing on the Appalachian regions. He has conducted on-site mine assessments in the Pittsburgh seam, volume and quality assessments of numerous large coal refuse piles, mine planning and permitting for refuse pile development, sub-surface and subsidence investigations, surface mining evaluations, and property assessments of reserves and mineability. Walt, who holds a B.S. in Geological Sciences and M.S. in Mining Engineering from Penn State, founded Walter W. Kaufman & Associates in 1982 and has been President of Kaufman Engineering, Inc. since 1998.Walt is based in Carbondale, Pennsylvania.

Power and Plant Profiles

Carol Miles Dean has been with the company since its inception and provides in-depth analysis on all aspects of individual coal and nuclear power plants. Carol pays particular attention to capacity changes, transportation options, operational issues, purchasing patterns, and clean air strategies.

Pollution Control and Combustion Engineering

Willam Ellison RE has been the Director pf Ellison Consultants since 1981. Located in Monrovia, Maryland, Bill has consulted with JD Energy in its environmental forecasts since the late 1980’s. His field of specialization since 1966 has been stack gas cleaning including NOx abatement, flue gas desulfurization and management of resulting liquid and solid by – products. He currently is in the forefront of technical development activities for commercializing optimum means of achieving NOx emission reduction in existing FGD facilities.

Transportation and Contracting Indices

Paul Thomas has been with JD Energy since the 1990’s following an extensive career with Westinghouse where he held international as well as national positions, including Director of European Manufacturing. Paul conducts a broad range of analyses across transportation modes, and also contributes to large portions of our Contract Escalators publication.

Data Management

Diane Elam manages our data efforts to ensure we have timely information in the most accessible format. While JD Energy does not purport to be a data provider, Diane makes an invaluable contribution in restructuring data into the format used in our forecasting models and analyses.

Environmental Forecasting   

Adam Schultz joined JD Energy in early 2007 and conducts research and forecasting efforts with regard to SO2, NOx, mercury, and CO2.  Adam graduated from Tufts University in 2004 and has worked extensively in the political arena, giving him considerable insight into the political and regulatory process surrounding environmental issues.
